Why Cruise When You Can Cunard: Change the Category’s Visual Language
Cunard
In a category associated with blue skies and destination views, black-and-white imagery made the brand’s point of view part of the offer. Difference still had to lead to an understandable service.
Make a heritage service distinctive within a familiar category. Collect a small set of descriptions of how an invented category usually presents itself. For a fictional neighbourhood cinema, that might be a crowded poster grid or a list of showtimes. Decide which convention is necessary for orientation and which merely makes every message look alike. Then change one element deliberately. Ask reviewers to name the offer before explaining the design choice. If they cannot tell what is available, the departure has gone too far or needs a clearer anchor. Distinction is useful when it sharpens recognition rather than replacing it with a puzzle.
