Think Different

Apple

An identity manifesto gives a product company a memorable point of view

Apple presented the campaign as a return to the values of its brand. The task was an identity statement about the company’s direction rather than the launch of a specific computer feature. A manifesto becomes useful when it gives customers and employees a coherent way to understand the company. Before writing one, identify decisions that already demonstrate the belief: product design, support or who the brand serves. Abstract admiration is easy to imitate. A credible statement should make some future choices more likely and others less acceptable.

iPod Silhouettes

Apple iPod / iTunes

A distinctive product cue anchors a simplified image of the desired experience

The campaign expressed portable music as an experience rather than explaining a computer accessory. Its central subject was the listener’s movement and enjoyment, with the device kept visually identifiable. Lifestyle imagery can become generic when the product is incidental. The useful design question is which visible cue connects the human experience to the particular offer. Choose an honest, distinctive element and make it legible at small scale. The cue should help recognition without asking viewers to infer technical advantages that the picture does not demonstrate.

Welcome Home

Apple HomePod

A spatial fantasy makes an invisible listening experience emotionally legible

Welcome Home positioned HomePod through the felt experience of listening at home. The story begins with a tired person returning from a crowded day, creating a recognizable contrast for the music to change. An emotional transformation needs a clear starting point. A specific moment of fatigue or constraint gives the later change meaning without a lengthy explanation. For an adaptation, choose an ordinary situation the product can credibly improve. Avoid implying that a consumer device treats a health condition or resolves a much larger problem than its actual role supports.

Misunderstood

Apple

A narrative reveal turns apparent distraction into a concrete act of care

The holiday film addressed a familiar tension: a young person appearing absorbed by a phone during family time. Its argument concerned what technology enables people to make, rather than screen use as an end in itself. A reversal can be powerful when the same evidence gains a new interpretation rather than being contradicted by an arbitrary twist. Write the story backwards from the reveal and check that earlier details remain plausible. The transferable mechanism is a change in perspective. Avoid humiliating a real person or manufacturing conflict simply to produce a gratifying ending.

Built For It Trials: Stack

Caterpillar

A familiar tabletop game made industrial precision understandable without requiring specialist equipment knowledge.

Stack opened Caterpillar’s Built For It Trials film series in April 2014. Caterpillar describes five experienced operators using its machines to remove and replace oversized wooden game blocks. The familiar stacking task gave a broad audience a way to understand control and coordination. A technical claim becomes easier to follow when the task has a clear success condition. Start with the capability buyers need to understand, then choose an analogy that preserves it. Here, balance and controlled movement are visible without a specification sheet. For another category, avoid a challenge whose result depends mainly on unrelated production tricks or unusual conditions.

30 Years in the Making / The French Exchange

Renault Clio

An anniversary became the background to a relationship, allowing product history and human change to share one timeline.

Renault launched the UK campaign on 8 November 2019 to promote the new Clio while looking back across roughly three decades of the model. The creative followed two people who meet during a school exchange and later build a life together, rather than presenting the anniversary as a list of engineering milestones. An anniversary is an internal milestone until it gives an audience a reason to care now. Decide whether history demonstrates continuity, accumulated expertise or change. Then connect it to the current offer with specific evidence. Nostalgia should not require customers to have owned the old product or make the newest version seem like a museum exhibit.

Daughter / Drive Progress

Audi of America

A father’s thoughts during a race turned an abstract equality position into a concrete question about a child’s future.

Audi released Daughter on 1 February 2017 ahead of its Super Bowl placement. The sixty-second film follows a father watching his daughter compete in a downhill cart race while considering how her future opportunities might be judged. The story is fictional, not evidence about a real child’s employment prospects. A broad word such as progress can remain empty until the story gives it a concrete consequence. Write the question a character faces and the condition the brand says should change. This helps viewers understand the position, while also making the company accountable for what it implies. Avoid using a moving scene to hide an undefined or unverifiable promise.

A Message to Space

Hyundai Motor

An immense physical message made an ordinary wish to connect across distance visible at an extraordinary scale.

Hyundai’s 13 April 2015 release introduced a project connecting an astronaut on the International Space Station with his daughter. Eleven Genesis vehicles created a large tire-track message on Delamar Dry Lake in Nevada. INNOCEAN’s portfolio also records the campaign as its work. Scale alone asks people to admire a company; a specific recipient gives them a reason to follow the effort. State who needs what and why the chosen action matters to them. For an adaptation, an ordinary useful delivery may be stronger than a record attempt. The technical process should remain in service of the human purpose rather than replace it.

The Invisible Drive

Mercedes-Benz / Daimler

A camera-and-screen illusion gave an otherwise invisible product proposition a visible contradiction.

The campaign promoted the B-Class F-CELL through a vehicle that appeared to blend into its surroundings. PAGE’s 9 March 2012 report says the Hamburg activation took place in January. The award entry frames the illusion around environmental invisibility; that is advertising language, not a complete lifecycle assessment. The strongest surprise opens a question the brand can answer credibly. Write the contradiction in plain language, then check whether the explanation brings people closer to understanding the offer. If the reveal merely shows how a trick was performed, the product may remain incidental. Test brand and proposition recall separately from memory of the unusual image.

Gorilla / Glass and a Half Full Productions

Cadbury Dairy Milk

Entertainment can express a product pleasure without illustrating consumption.

D&AD describes Cadbury seeking renewed affection for Dairy Milk in 2007. Fallon proposed communication that would deliver pleasure rather than explain chocolate. The resulting work introduced the Glass and a Half Full Productions platform. This family record includes related entertainment executions rather than counting each subsequent film as a new campaign. Pleasure is usually stated as a product promise. A more demanding creative question is whether the communication itself offers a small version of that experience. Start by identifying the sensory or social reward the category already provides. Then test whether the proposed entertainment expresses that reward without depending on an explanatory paragraph.

Guinness Clear

Guinness

A familiar brand voice made choosing ordinary water a socially legible act.

Guinness Clear was a moderation campaign aimed at the adult rugby-viewing occasion around the 2019 Six Nations. Contemporary agency-supplied coverage identifies discomfort about ordering water in a pub as the creative problem. Clear was tap water, not a new alcoholic product or a branded product with special health properties. Some barriers are social rather than informational. A clear label can give people language for an already available option. Investigate whether the audience actually experiences the proposed embarrassment before designing around it. Avoid inventing stigma, and ensure the plain-language option remains equally acceptable for anyone who dislikes the campaign vocabulary.

The Entrance

Heineken

A crowded scene became a set of optional stories rather than one compulsory viewing path.

Heineken’s launch release describes a new global campaign presenting a worldly brand identity. The Entrance introduced a socially adept protagonist moving through a party. The record concerns that film and its related character stories, not every execution that subsequently used the Open Your World umbrella. A secondary character becomes an invitation when a viewer senses a relationship that has not been fully explained. Build these openings into the central story instead of attaching unrelated bonus content afterward. Test whether viewers can identify a question they actually want answered. More content is useful only when it resolves genuine curiosity.
