THE EDITOR’S FIRST READ / PRODUCT PROOF

When the product
becomes the story.

The Epic Split made a technical steering benefit understandable to people who would never read a truck specification.

Jean-Claude Van Damme’s balance supplied the tension. The trucks supplied the reason the film existed. The useful creative question is simple: which product benefit could become visible through one fair, memorable demonstration?

Burger King

Turn a rival’s physical footprint into the reason people try your own product.

Burger King wanted downloads for a relaunched app with order-ahead, a feature that was already familiar in the category. “Go to the competitor” creates an immediate contradiction. A person can retell the idea accurately in one sentence. That gives journalists and customers the same compact story to pass on.

2023 Wrapped

Spotify

Give customers a story about themselves that only your product can tell.

The opportunity was to turn a year of listening into an engaging personal recap. Spotify described the 2023 experience as a celebration of listeners’ year. Most brand posts ask audiences to care about the company. A personal recap gives the audience something to inspect, agree with, laugh at or dispute about themselves. Those reactions are fuel for a conversation.

Always / Procter & Gamble

Make an invisible social habit visible, then give people a phrase they can reclaim.

Always wanted to champion girls’ confidence around puberty. The campaign focused on the everyday expression “like a girl.” A demonstration lets viewers notice the inconsistency before the brand explains it. That creates an emotional turn inside the film rather than relying on a slogan to announce that the subject matters.

Give supporters a repeatable action and an explicit way to pass it to the next person.

People living with ALS and their communities sought attention and support for the disease. “Everyone should help” does not tell anyone who should act next. A named invitation creates a concrete social connection through which the activity can travel. The useful design principle is explicit handoff, not coercion.

STF wanted more people to become curious about Sweden and to let residents tell their own stories. A country claiming to be open could buy an ad about openness. A country answering the phone makes that value testable. The execution itself becomes evidence for the message.

Cadbury Celebrations / Mondelēz

Turn a brand’s expensive asset into a useful tool other businesses want to distribute.

India’s small retailers were rebuilding after pandemic disruption while larger online sellers competed for festive attention. Cadbury wanted to support local shopping during Diwali. A shopkeeper had a direct reason to use an ad carrying their own store name. Distribution was connected to someone else’s commercial interest, rather than relying only on generosity toward the sponsoring brand.

Dove / Unilever

A timely response is stronger when it applies an established belief to a changed reality.

During the first COVID-19 wave, healthcare workers’ faces showed the effects of prolonged protective equipment use. Dove sought a response consistent with its broader approach to beauty. The portraits showed a physical cost of caring that conventional beauty advertising usually smooths away. That contrast made the message understandable without a complex plot or a long explanation.

Let the story travel for weeks, then make its resolution teach the product truth.

CeraVe wanted its first Super Bowl campaign to make its dermatologist-developed positioning memorable beyond a single television spot. For Warzone Mobile’s 2024 launch, Whalar sought awareness and app-store visits among casual mobile gamers and battle-royale fans in the UK, France and Germany. For existing customers, a location, ritual or shared challenge may stand for time spent together. The adaptation question is which specific memory still matters to the audience. Gift of Time

Dell Technologies

Show the life benefit first, explain the feature, then give interested viewers a useful next step.

Dell asked The Goat Agency to explain how its AI-enabled technology could simplify tasks and free time for other activities across four markets. A technical capability is abstract until someone can see what it changes. A useful creative brief therefore asks for the before, the task and the after. This helps distinguish a demonstrated benefit from a lifestyle scene that merely happens to contain the product.

Think Small

Volkswagen

Make the supposed disadvantage the organizing idea, then show why it helps the right buyer.

Volkswagen’s official chronicle describes a need to regain market share against Renault and US compact-car competition. In a market associated with larger cars, the Beetle’s size also required a different argument for desirability. Showing a genuinely small product at small scale makes the proposition visible immediately. The transferable principle is alignment between form and message: a faster service could demonstrate speed, while a simpler process could remove steps. Empty space alone is not a strategy; it must clarify something worth choosing.

Small Business Saturday

American Express OPEN

Give a fragmented community one date, one action and practical tools to act together.

After the recession, small businesses needed customers. American Express sought to support local merchants while strengthening its own relationships with businesses and consumers, in a shopping period already shaped by Black Friday and Cyber Monday. People can support local businesses in principle without changing their next shopping trip. A clear occasion reduces the effort of deciding when to act. The opportunity for another brand is to identify an existing behavior it can organize, rather than assuming that inventing a named day automatically creates demand.

Real Beauty Sketches

Dove / Unilever

Make a difficult self-perception idea concrete through a simple, humane contrast.

Dove wanted beauty to feel less like a source of anxiety and more like confidence. The creative focused on the gap between women’s self-descriptions and descriptions provided by others, rather than demonstrating a product feature. Two outputs make a difference easier to discuss than a slogan about confidence alone. In another category, a truthful comparison could reveal hidden effort or an overlooked benefit. The design challenge is to make the contrast understandable without misleading selection, manipulated conditions or a claim broader than the demonstration supports.

  • A campaign launch year and its award year can differ. Display both.
  • Brand and award-entry metrics are reported results, not independent causal audits.
  • Views, impressions, participants, app downloads, revenue and incremental profit are different measures. Never substitute one for another.
  • A large result does not reveal what would have happened without the campaign. Keep paid support, existing brand scale, timing and selection effects visible.
  • No campaign images, videos, logos or layouts have been copied. Link to original sources or obtain rights before using their assets.
