FCK

KFC

Compress a truthful admission into a recognisable object, then pair it with useful repair information.

A chicken-delivery failure closed hundreds of UK restaurants in February 2018. KFC needed to acknowledge a conspicuous service failure while public discussion was already intense. The immediate communication task was an apology, not a product launch or a claim that operations had recovered. A witty response works only after readers can see what the business is taking responsibility for. Write the plain factual admission first, then test whether the creative treatment makes that admission clearer. If the joke could run without mentioning the customer problem, it is probably distracting from the repair rather than helping it.

11 Herbs & Spices

KFC

Hide a small, truthful brand connection in an owned surface where an attentive customer can genuinely find it.

KFC wanted to make its familiar Original Recipe idea worth noticing again. Wieden+Kennedy’s account describes the creative problem as celebrating eleven herbs and spices through something people could discover rather than another straightforward claim about the recipe. Profiles contain more than posts: names, descriptions, lists and interface choices can carry ideas. Begin with a product truth that can fit one of those surfaces naturally. A puzzle hidden in a random setting is harder to explain and easier to mistake for a broken account than a clue rooted in the brand.

Moldy Whopper

Burger King

Expose a meaningful product change through a demonstrable consequence, with the limits kept visible.

Burger King needed to communicate removal of artificial preservatives from its signature burger in a category where ingredient reformulation was already familiar. The creative challenge was making a product change visible without implying that a broad health benefit had been established. Ingredient decisions are difficult to see in an ordinary beauty shot. A demonstration can translate an invisible change into a visual consequence. Start by identifying exactly what the demonstration establishes, under what conditions, and what it cannot establish; otherwise a memorable image may invite a broader inference than the evidence supports.

McWhopper

Burger King

Turn an abstract shared goal into a concrete collaborative act, with consent and a viable fallback.

Burger King framed its rivalry with McDonald’s as an opportunity to promote awareness of UN Peace Day. Instead of announcing a conventional charitable sponsorship, the brand proposed a recognisable collaboration whose outcome people could follow and discuss. Peace between companies is not peace between nations, but a familiar rivalry can make an awareness invitation easy to understand. Choose a symbol connected to something the organisations can actually deliver. Then explain the cause and beneficiary separately so the entertaining metaphor does not imply an impact it cannot substantiate.

Google Home of the Whopper

Burger King

Connect channels through an explicit, useful invitation that leaves the audience in control.

DAVID’s stated challenge was to extend a fifteen-second television message about Whopper ingredients. The campaign used a connected device as an additional distribution surface, making the relationship between television audio and voice assistants the central creative mechanism. The original idea treats one medium’s output as another medium’s input. That is a useful way to think about integrated experiences, but technical possibility is not permission. Map the user, device owner and platform’s expectations before designing the handoff, especially when the second channel belongs to someone else.

Whopper Sacrifice

Burger King

Turn preference into a safe, reversible choice with an explicit benefit and clear permission boundaries.

Burger King and its agency wanted to dramatise attachment to the Whopper. Interviews with the original team describe a cultural tension between collecting large online friend lists and maintaining meaningful relationships, which became the provocation behind the promotion. The idea made people enact a preference rather than merely agree with an advertising statement. That is a strong creative pattern, but the choice should be safe, voluntary and proportionate. Use a playful trade-off within a product experience rather than asking customers to damage relationships, disclose private information or demonstrate unhealthy devotion.

Follow the Arches

McDonald’s Canada

Turn an owned brand asset into a useful cue at the exact moment a customer needs direction.

McDonald’s had a familiar identity but inconsistent signs directing people to its restaurants. Cossette treated this ordinary navigation problem as a design opportunity: make directions useful while bringing them back into the brand’s visual system. A directional placement has a specific job before it has an aesthetic one: helping someone reach a destination. List the questions people have at that location, such as which exit or which side of the street. Creative value grows when the brand makes the answer simpler rather than asking the traveller to solve a separate advertising puzzle.

Raise Your Arches

McDonald’s UK

Find a small social action that naturally expresses the brand, then connect it to an easy, voluntary next step.

Leo Burnett wanted to dramatise the small release associated with an invitation to McDonald’s without relying on food close-ups or a restaurant scene. The agency says research with enthusiasts led it to the knowing eyebrow raise used between people proposing a visit. Marketing often focuses on eating the product, while the decision can begin with a tiny social signal beforehand. Study how people actually propose, coordinate and agree on a visit. A useful creative brief may sit in that transition between private desire and a shared plan rather than in another depiction of the product itself.

Famous Orders: The Travis Scott Meal

McDonald’s

Make a credible collaborator’s real product routine easy for customers to try, with fulfilment planned in advance.

Famous Orders began with the idea that celebrated people have ordinary McDonald’s preferences. The September 2020 Travis Scott execution moved that thought from a Super Bowl advertisement into an order customers could actually buy, with particular interest in reaching younger diners. A partnership becomes more credible when the person can explain a specific, longstanding use of the product. Investigate that fit before negotiating a large reach number. An endorsement can still be paid and authentic, provided the commercial relationship is disclosed and the personal preference is not invented for the advertisement.

WcDonald’s

McDonald’s

Build a respectful, credited contribution to an existing fan world and connect it to one coherent product experience.

McDonald’s recognised the fictional WcDonald’s restaurants that had appeared in anime and manga. The campaign sought cultural relevance by acknowledging that existing reference and giving fans a new official expression, rather than treating the audience as unfamiliar with the brand. A brand can learn from the ways audiences have adapted, joked about or reinterpreted it. Listen before claiming ownership. The creative opportunity is to contribute something worthwhile to that existing conversation, not to imply the company invented the community’s language or that every unofficial reference is an endorsement.

Where Life Happens

IKEA

Show a small, credible product contribution inside a recognisable life occasion.

The award entry describes a gap between affection for IKEA as a brand and affection for its products. The assignment was therefore to make furnishings matter within everyday situations, rather than merely repeat a broadly liked corporate identity. This is the Swedish campaign family, not the separate British Wonderful Everyday platform. List the moments in which someone needs the category before listing product attributes. A room that must accommodate changing family routines suggests a different story from a generic attractive living room. The transferable discipline is selecting a specific use occasion and proving one modest contribution, rather than turning every personal difficulty into a shopping opportunity.

Proudly Second Best

Al-Futtaim IKEA

Let the brand play a truthful supporting role beside something customers value more.

The award submission says the brief was to make parents, especially first-time parents, aware of IKEA’s children’s furniture range and build a connection with them. The task was category relevance: showing useful products while acknowledging that a parent matters more than any piece of furniture. A small admission can make a brand’s remaining claim more credible. Identify a real hierarchy in the customer’s life and place the product honestly within it. The technique fails when the concession disguises an important defect or when an audience needs reassurance about safety, reliability or accessibility rather than an amusing declaration of inferiority.
