Read the campaign story
Salesforce announced #TeamEarth on 3 February 2022 with Matthew McConaughey as a partner and co-creator. The release scheduled The New Frontier film for the following day’s Winter Olympics opening ceremony. Rather than celebrating escape into space, the story directed attention towards responsibilities on Earth. The platform’s website offered learning and participation routes related to climate, inclusion and product design.
The producer’s record identifies the internal creative team and the film’s production partners. Subsequent expressions remain one values platform here. The company’s listed grants, commitments and operational claims are not treated as campaign-caused outcomes or independently audited sustainability evidence. This case is distinct from the library’s Trailhead learning-system study: its subject is a public corporate position and the transition from a broad message to a choice of next steps.
Editorial interpretation: a familiar metaphor can establish a contrast quickly, giving an abstract corporate position a memorable scene. That compression creates an obligation to explain what follows. A viewer who agrees with the sentiment still needs to know whether the invitation is to learn, volunteer, make a financial commitment or evaluate the company’s own practices. Those actions require different information and should not be blurred into one undifferentiated sign of support.
Editorial interpretation: a values platform can link several programmes, but the link is an organising story rather than proof that each programme works. Clear evidence boundaries matter especially when the message uses universal language. An organisation can state an ambition, describe an existing activity and acknowledge an unresolved problem in the same campaign. Credibility depends on making those states distinguishable instead of allowing the strength of the film to stand in for substantiation.
Turn the large invitation into a small set of honest choices
Give each route a plain-language description of what the person will do, what effort is involved and whether any commitment follows. A learning resource should not silently become an enrolment or donation flow. Let people understand the topic without supplying unnecessary personal information. A small organisation can begin with one useful explanation and one optional action rather than an extensive menu that is difficult to maintain or support.
Keep the company’s position separate from its evidence
Create distinct places for the stated principle, the actions taken and the basis for any result claim. Date the information and describe material limitations. Do not imply that a values statement certifies environmental performance, fair treatment or product accessibility. A reviewer should be able to identify which assertions are factual, which are aspirations and which require more evidence. The communication can be confident without making every part of the organisation appear beyond scrutiny.
Preserve choice when a message appeals to shared responsibility
People may agree with a concern while declining a particular programme, sponsor or public association. Avoid treating that choice as evidence that they lack values or care less than participants. Provide a quiet route to information and make publicity optional. For a workplace or community setting, ensure that participation does not become a condition of belonging. Measure whether the invitation is understandable and useful, rather than only how many people publicly repeat the campaign language.
A small test for another brief
Proposed adaptation: a fictional adult community arts centre could compare two offline information pages about maintaining a shared materials cupboard. One opens with a broad message about collective care; the other begins with practical options. Both offer the same explanation of the problem, a voluntary learning activity and an explicit no-action choice. Use synthetic inventory figures and make no real donation, volunteering or sustainability claim.
Measure accurate understanding of the options, recognition of unsupported outcome claims and comfort with declining. Separate agreement with the general principle from trust in the sponsor or willingness to commit resources.
Stop if the message pressures participation, disguises a consequential commitment or makes a fictional activity appear to certify environmental or social performance.
- Label each option by its effort and whether it creates a commitment.
- Keep factual evidence separate from aspirations and fictional examples.
- Ask consenting adults to choose a route privately without identifying themselves publicly.
