Separate a valid model file from a supported viewing experience
A structural validation pass and a faithful runtime render answer different questions.

A delivery file can be structurally sound while relying on a feature the target viewer does not implement. Review validation findings, declared dependencies and the visible result as separate gates. Combining them into a single “works” checkbox hides the reason a receiver fails.
What you will leave with: A validator disposition and receiver-capability matrix tied to the features that affect the product’s meaning.
Use this when
- A glTF or GLB asset uses extensions or specialized delivery features.
- An asset passes a validator but fails or changes appearance in a target viewer.
This is glTF delivery compatibility, not general archive hygiene or cross-application film interchange. Do not remove dependency declarations merely to make a file load. No universal viewer support is implied. Sources checked on 7 November 2026.
Freeze the file and classify the required evidence
Identify the exact delivery candidate and any external resources it needs. Record the target viewers and versions the team intends to support. Keep three questions visible: is the file structurally acceptable, can the receiver process its required features, and does the resulting product representation remain faithful? Evidence for one question should not be silently reused as proof of another.
Khronos’s validator documents checks of file structure, references, buffers, images and specified extensions, producing a report. glTF lists used extensions separately from required ones. These are useful inputs to acceptance, not a substitute for reviewing the delivered experience.
Turn validator findings into dispositions
Have the technical owner run the appropriate validator on the actual candidate with its resources available. Retain the tool version, configuration and report. For each relevant finding, record whether it requires repair, reflects a documented limitation of the check or needs further investigation. Do not present “no errors” as complete if resources were unavailable or important checks were excluded.
Keep the reason for any accepted warning readable to the next owner. A broad suppression that makes the report quiet can hide future defects. When the file changes, rerun the check and compare new findings rather than attaching the old report to the new export. The producer’s role is to require a defensible disposition, not to manually edit unfamiliar technical fields until the report turns green.
Map consequential features to actual receivers
List the declared dependencies and describe what each contributes to this asset. Prioritize features whose absence changes geometry, texture interpretation or a meaningful surface property. For each target receiver, record the evidence of support, the tested result and any fallback representation. Distinguish a receiver that cannot decode the asset from one that loads it but displays an incomplete approximation.
Inspect the specific feature in the rendered product using a view that makes its contribution visible. A generic spinning preview can miss a finish or detail that matters only from another angle. If the receiver treats a feature as optional, still ask whether losing it is acceptable for this product explanation. Technical optionality does not automatically make a visible change editorially harmless.
Resolve unsupported routes without falsifying dependencies
When a required feature is unsupported, choose a compatible export, a different supported presentation or a clearly limited route. Do not delete the required declaration and assume the underlying dependency vanished. Have the asset owner explain what changed in the replacement and repeat both validation and visual acceptance. A workaround that restores loading but changes the product is not a completed repair.
Package the approved file with the validator disposition, tested receiver matrix and unresolved limits. Review that matrix when the exporter, compression route or viewer changes. Keep failed candidates separate from the accepted delivery so a later producer cannot accidentally revive an incompatible file. The result should identify why the asset is accepted in each offered route and what alternative remains when that route cannot faithfully render it.
Make the reasoning concrete.
A fictional furniture model passes structural validation but relies on a material feature that one intended receiver does not reproduce. The affected fabric looks unlike the approved reference even though the model loads and rotates.
Treat validation as visual approval
Opening: Publish the same asset everywhere because the report contains no blocking error.
Hypothesis: The team has a simple technical gate.
Risk: The gate does not establish that the receiver preserves the consequential material representation.
Review receiver support separately
Opening: Document the missing feature and test a compatible representation or alternative route.
Hypothesis: The delivery decision addresses the actual product appearance in each receiver.
Risk: The replacement needs its own validation and visual evidence.
The team chooses the separate compatibility gate. It preserves truthful dependency information and does not label an altered representation equivalent merely because it now loads.
Take the questions into your next brief.
Use these prompts in your own notes. Nothing is submitted from this page.
Candidate
Which exact file and resources does the report describe?
Findings
What disposition and rationale close each relevant validator issue?
Dependencies
Which declared features materially affect this product representation?
Receivers
What evidence establishes processing support and faithful appearance per route?
Replacement
What approved export or alternative resolves an unsupported dependency?
Watch for the wrong conclusion.
- Calling a validator pass a visual-quality certificate.
- Suppressing warnings without preserving a reason.
- Removing a required declaration without replacing the dependency.
Your next action
Choose one extension-dependent feature and connect its validation evidence to a visible acceptance check in every offered receiver.
