Choose a business category without borrowing another operator’s services

A category should describe the business represented by the profile. It should not become a collection of attractive searches, every item sold, or services delivered by a different operator at the same address.

What you will leave with: A primary/additional-category rationale based on the business itself, with category-versus-service and independently-operated-department exclusions.

Use this when

  • A settled business identity needs a defensible primary and additional-category rationale.
  • A co-located service or seasonal offer is tempting the team to broaden a profile.

Not entity-resolution work, a service-area audit or a category-switching ranking experiment.

Begin after the entity is settled

Google’s category guidance, checked 7 November 2026, asks for a specific available primary category and a limited set of additional categories rather than one for every offering. Independently owned and operated public-facing departments should not lend their categories to the host profile. Category changes can trigger verification. The exercise therefore starts with an already resolved business identity.

Write a one-sentence description of the operator’s actual business before opening a category list. Identify what a customer is principally choosing this business to do. Separate that answer from seasonal promotions and occasional services. If the description requires combining two independent operators, stop and resolve the identity boundary first; a category choice cannot repair a profile that represents the wrong entity.

Create an evidence-based category shortlist

Prepare a shortlist using the categories actually available for the relevant profile context. Record the candidate wording exactly and explain which part of the business it describes. Keep the evidence concrete: the public offer, operating model and customer transaction, rather than competitor rankings or a presumed search-volume advantage.

For each candidate, ask whether it describes what the business is or merely something the business stocks, hosts or mentions. A retailer may sell a specialist product without becoming the specialist service provider named by a tempting category. When an exact category is absent, document the closest truthful broader description and the meaning it loses. Do not invent an unsupported category label or disguise that limitation in the rationale.

Test additional categories against the operator boundary

Make a separate column for genuine secondary activities performed by this same business. Each proposed additional category needs its own evidence and should still fit the profile’s identity sentence. Remove entries supported only by a temporary campaign, a referral arrangement or an unrelated tenant’s service menu.

Use a negative test as well as a positive one: what customer expectation might this category create that the business cannot fulfill? Record who would actually take the booking, deliver the work and resolve a complaint. These questions help expose borrowed capabilities without turning the exercise into a broad service-area audit. If a separately operated department has its own eligible identity, document the exclusion from this profile rather than absorbing its category for convenience.

Approve a rationale that survives a promotion change

The final artifact should show the preferred primary category, supported additions, rejected candidates and the reason for each decision. Have the operating owner review the description for truth, then have the profile owner check current platform availability and any verification implications before an authorized change. A category rationale is not permission to edit the profile.

Retest the choice against a quiet trading period, not just the busiest promotional week. If the primary category makes sense only while a special offer runs, it may describe the campaign rather than the business. Keep a dated review trigger for a genuine operating-model change. Do not promise a ranking improvement or use frequent category switching as an experiment without considering the customer meaning and account consequences.

Make the reasoning concrete.

A fictional homewares shop houses a separately owned furniture-restoration desk. Its marketer proposes adding a restoration-service category to the shop because the counter appears in the same photographs.

Borrow the co-located service

Opening: Add the category on the strength of shared premises and imagery.

Hypothesis: More kinds of searches might appear relevant.

Risk: Customers may expect the shop to perform work owned by another business.

Preserve the operator boundary

Opening: Classify the shop from its own offer and record the independent desk as excluded.

Hypothesis: The profile’s categories describe the operator customers are selecting.

Risk: Some promotional ideas cannot be expressed as host-business categories.

The rationale keeps the shop’s operating identity separate and routes the desk’s eligibility questions to its own owner. It makes no ranking forecast and does not perform a category edit.

Take the questions into your next brief.

Use these prompts in your own notes. Nothing is submitted from this page.

  1. Identity

What business does this settled profile represent?

  2. Primary

Which available category best matches its main operating purpose?

  3. Secondary

Which additional activities belong to the same operator?

  4. Exclusion

Which tempting category would create a false expectation?

  5. Review

Who confirms truth, availability and any verification implications?

Watch for the wrong conclusion.

  • Selecting a category for every product mentioned on the website.
  • Using another tenant’s services to broaden the host profile.
  • Treating a seasonal promotion as a permanent business identity.

Your next action

Write a category rationale with one primary candidate, justified additions and explicit exclusions before asking for any profile change.
