Justify the views excluded from ad-viewability obstruction
Review a reused interface container before carrying an earlier measurement decision into its new function.

An excluded interface element changes what a measurement system treats as an obstruction. Require a defensible reason for every exclusion and a clear end to its applicability, rather than treating a convenient API call as measurement approval.
What you will leave with: A justified view register matched to a qualified decision and a version-scoped implementation trace.
Use this when
- An implementation proposes excluding native interface views from ad-obstruction measurement.
- A reused view changes function during its lifetime.
Not viewability optimization, measurement accreditation or automatic qualification of any UI element.
Separate technical capability from justified use
The Android OM SDK 1.5 JavaScriptSessionService documentation, checked 7 November 2026, describes registered friendly obstructions applying to the service’s sessions until removed. The method takes a view, purpose and detailed reason. This API describes a mechanism; it does not establish that any proposed interface element qualifies for exclusion. A qualified measurement owner must decide applicability under the relevant requirements.
Begin with a diagram of the actual advertisement and surrounding native interface. Name the elements that could cover it and identify who owns each one. Keep ordinary navigation, advertiser content and publisher controls distinguishable in the drawing. Do not begin with a target viewability number or work backward toward exclusions that improve it. The review must explain the interface honestly, regardless of whether the resulting metric is attractive.
Create a purpose-backed view register
For each proposed exclusion, record the element’s function, owner, screenshot reference, proposed purpose and specific justification. Ask what the user would lose if the element were absent and whether its location or size is essential to that function. These questions prepare the measurement owner’s review; they do not supply an automatic eligibility rule. A familiar close icon and a large promotional panel should not receive interchangeable explanations.
Tie the register to actual view identity in a supplied test build. A screenshot label alone can conceal that two different objects look the same, or that one reusable object later displays different content. Have the implementation owner show which object the proposed registration references. Avoid copying device identifiers or live session records into a public worksheet. An invented object label and a sanitized owner-provided trace are sufficient for the exercise.
Trace the lifetime across reuse and removal
Draw a timeline for the interface element: creation, appearance, content change, disappearance and any reuse. Mark the service boundary supplied by the implementer and compare it with the intended scope of the qualified decision. A justification for one small control does not automatically cover everything a reusable container might display later. Ask the owner to explain how the implementation preserves that distinction.
Use a fictional transition from an approved functional control to an unreviewed promotional panel in the same screen area. Request evidence that the latter is not silently treated as the former. Also inspect a route where the element is removed and a route where the screen is rebuilt. The required outcome is consistency with the approved register, not a universal lifecycle recipe inferred from a different SDK or application architecture.
Accept the register before interpreting the metric
Reconcile every proposed entry with the measurement owner’s decision and implementation evidence. Mark rejected, pending and approved entries separately. If the owner cannot justify an entry, the test should not quietly classify it as acceptable simply because the software accepts the method call. Likewise, a valid purpose on paper is insufficient when the referenced view or lifetime does not match the approved case.
Retain the view register, diagrams, applicability decision and version-scoped trace together. Any later interface redesign should identify which entries need review before old exclusions are reused. Keep this artifact separate from performance reporting, where served, measurable and viewable totals require their own denominator analysis. No real measurement configuration is changed here, and no metric improvement, accreditation or cross-platform equivalence is claimed.
Make the reasoning concrete.
A fictional news app uses a small playback control during an advertisement. A later screen reuses the same container for a promotional card. The implementation proposal carries the earlier exclusion forward without a new justification.
Keep the old registration
Opening: Treat the reused container as the same approved interface element.
Hypothesis: The implementation requires less maintenance.
Risk: The measurement treatment no longer follows the reviewed function.
Reconcile function and lifetime
Opening: Ask the qualified owner to assess the changed object and compare the resulting register with the supplied trace.
Hypothesis: The exclusion can be bounded to the actual approved purpose.
Risk: The new card may require a different layout or no exclusion.
The reviewer holds the changed entry. The exercise neither registers a view nor adjusts a live measurement result.
Take the questions into your next brief.
Use these prompts in your own notes. Nothing is submitted from this page.
Object
Which concrete view and visible function are under review?
Justification
Who determines whether exclusion is appropriate and on what basis?
Identity
Could the referenced container later represent different content?
Lifetime
Where does intended applicability begin and end in the supplied implementation?
Evidence
Which trace demonstrates agreement with the approved register?
Watch for the wrong conclusion.
- Choosing exclusions to improve reported performance.
- Treating an API purpose value as automatic eligibility.
- Reusing an approval after the view changes function.
Your next action
Draw one fictional view’s functional lifetime and mark the points requiring a qualified applicability decision.
