Measure the shaped run before deciding whether text fits
The same source letters can produce different advances after shaping.

Do not shorten approved copy until the production measurement explains the apparent space problem.
What you will leave with: A reproducible measurement record separating the supplied text from the production decision.
Use this when
- A short headline is rejected by a character-count heuristic.
- Two production settings disagree about the available horizontal space.
Not a truncation rule, language-quality approval or complete browser layout test.
Preserve the message while investigating the fit
HarfBuzz shapes a supplied string into glyph output. Keep the text, font, direction, script, language and feature configuration with the measurement.
First identify the actual constraint. Is the designer protecting a fixed label area, maintaining an approved typographic treatment or trying to keep a headline on one line? These are related but different requirements. State which can change before asking an editor to rewrite the message. An unnecessary wording change can remove a useful distinction while leaving the real production problem unresolved.
Use an intentionally small fixture whose expected inputs are inspectable. Preserve the original text literally, including any spaces that matter, and keep the content owner’s intended meaning separate from the technical experiment. The purpose is to explain a disagreement, not to discover a clever setting that squeezes any message into an unsuitable design. A successful numerical result remains evidence for a particular decision, not automatic creative approval.
Inspect the actual output rather than counting letters
Our original static font uses 1,000 units per em. Actual HarfBuzz 10.2.0 C API execution keeps input “fi” unchanged: liga off returns glyphs 1 and 2 at clusters 0 and 1; liga on returns glyph 3 at cluster 0. A cluster records source association, not a universal editing boundary.
The returned horizontal advances are 600 and 250 in the first run, and 700 in the second. At the stipulated size of 20 layout units, multiply each total by 20 / 1000: (600 + 250) × 20 / 1000 = 17; 700 × 20 / 1000 = 14. Against limit 15, the first exceeds and the second fits the advance allowance.
HarfBuzz distinguishes movement to the next glyph from offsets and glyph extents. The sum above measures advance, not ink containment. No browser rendering, complex-script review or final visual clipping test was performed.
Keep the full output rows rather than only the final pass label. A reviewer can then reconcile the arithmetic with the supplied configuration. If another implementation disagrees, request its equivalent evidence before deciding that the editorial text is too long.
Decide which part of the brief may change
The two results create a production question, not a mandate to turn a feature on. Ask whether the compared setting is part of the approved design. If it is, correcting an inconsistent handoff may be appropriate. If it is not, changing the treatment merely to pass a space check would require a design decision. Do not quietly substitute a technical convenience for the requested appearance.
When the treatment must remain fixed, bring the measured discrepancy to the content and layout owners together. They can consider a permitted layout adjustment or a purposeful rewrite. Give them the exact constraint and the meaning that must survive; asking for something shorter without context invites a superficial edit. Retain the original wording so the team can see what the proposed revision gives up.
For a larger campaign, separate actual exceptions from blanket rules. One synthetic pair demonstrates why a simplistic heuristic can mislead, but it does not establish that every headline will behave similarly. Avoid turning the fixture’s result into a new universal character limit. Use it to improve the measurement question posed for each supported treatment.
Keep measurement acceptance separate from creative acceptance
Document the tested file, complete configuration, output and comparison boundary as one record. Add the decision owner’s response without replacing the raw result. This makes it possible to distinguish a corrected setup from a changed creative requirement when someone revisits the campaign later. A screenshot alone may be persuasive, but the accompanying record explains what was actually compared.
Request the final receiving proof at the intended placement and review it for the actual reading task. That is where the designer evaluates whether the result communicates appropriately. Technical consistency does not settle emphasis, tone or legibility. Conversely, an attractive proof should not excuse an unexplained measurement discrepancy if the same treatment must be reproduced elsewhere.
Close only the question the evidence answers. If the local comparison is sound but the receiving proof has not been reviewed, record that separation. The next person should know whether they are repeating arithmetic, investigating implementation differences or making an editorial choice. Clear boundaries prevent a narrow measurement from becoming an unsupported approval of the whole asset.
Make the reasoning concrete.
A fictional campaign editor is asked to shorten a two-letter specimen before receiving any production evidence. The executed comparison above shows why the team should investigate the setup first.
Rewrite immediately
Opening: Remove content solely because the initial heuristic rejects it.
Hypothesis: The space warning may disappear.
Risk: Meaning changes without explaining the production discrepancy.
Resolve the configuration
Opening: Give the designer the recorded comparison before choosing an edit.
Hypothesis: The team can distinguish repair from redesign.
Risk: A receiving proof and editorial judgment still remain.
The editor retains the wording and asks the owner to identify the intended treatment. The fixture does not authorize a live design change.
Take the questions into your next brief.
Use these prompts in your own notes. Nothing is submitted from this page.
Constraint
Which space requirement is actually fixed?
Record
Can another reviewer reproduce the supplied configuration?
Comparison
Which output explains the disagreement?
Authority
Who may change the treatment or wording?
Boundary
What does the numerical check leave untested?
Watch for the wrong conclusion.
- Shortening approved copy before understanding the constraint.
- Choosing a convenient setting without design authorization.
- Treating the local fixture as universal campaign evidence.
Your next action
Reproduce the displayed advance arithmetic and write whether the next decision belongs to implementation, design or content.
