Explain what dither changes before calling the result more accurate
A smaller average error can coexist with a larger mean squared error.

A technical improvement needs a named criterion. Do not let a favorable summary replace the question the sound owner actually needs answered.
What you will leave with: A reproducible error comparison with separate conclusions for each reported quantity.
Use this when
- An export review proposes adding dither without explaining the intended benefit.
- Two reports use the word error for different numerical summaries.
Not a bit-depth recommendation, noise-shaping recipe, listening assessment or permission to change a production master.
Specify the error being discussed
Widrow and Kollár’s Quantization Noise distinguishes dither from quantization error. Here use nonsubtractive unit-step rounding, no saturation, and total error e = y − x. The added disturbance remains in the output; this is not subtractive dither.
Ask the sound owner what prompted the proposed change. A quiet passage, an unfamiliar export option and a numerical discrepancy are different starting points. Preserve the unmodified source and the exact requested destination before discussing a remedy. The review should not quietly become an experiment on the only available recording.
Write the criterion in ordinary language before calculating it. Does the reviewer want to understand the average difference, the spread of differences or a particular reproduction failure? A summary called accuracy is too vague to support a decision. Keep the question connected to the intended delivery rather than borrowing a favorable statistic from an unrelated demonstration.
Reproduce the supplied rounding comparison
Use N = 65536 copies of x = 0.25. NumPy rint rounds to nearest integer, with ties to even. Without dither, every output is zero: total error is −0.25 throughout.
In NumPy 2.3.5, create rng = default_rng(202611070096), then d = rng.random(N) − rng.random(N). Each call supplies uniform draws on [0,1); subtract the second array from the first. Compute y = rint(x + d). The resulting output counts are −1: 2042, zero: 45167, and 1: 18327.
Two independent uniform components give triangular dither. This fixture uses independent-pair construction, not a difference between adjacent samples of one reused sequence. It demonstrates a statistical behavior, not recovery of each original sample.
Keep the generated arrays or the exact generation instructions with the result. The seed alone is an incomplete description if another reviewer changes the draw order, length or operation. Retain the baseline comparison rather than sending only the more reassuring output. That gives the sound owner a concrete account of what was changed and what was held fixed.
Read the three summaries separately
From the counts, output mean is (18327 − 2042) / 65536 = 0.24848938; mean error is approximately −0.00151062. Error variance, using denominator N, is 0.24905930; mean squared error (MSE) is 0.24906158. Without dither, variance is zero but MSE is 0.0625. For these arrays, MSE equals variance plus squared mean error. Amplitudes use quantizer-step units; variance and MSE use squared units.
For the ideal continuous triangular distribution, output probabilities are 1/32, 22/32 and 9/32. Their weighted mean is 0.25 and total-error MSE is 0.25. These are ensemble properties, not recovery of individual inputs.
Variance centers errors on their mean; MSE squares them around zero. Thus this run reduces the magnitude of average error while increasing MSE. It does not improve every error criterion. A finite run also need not equal the theoretical mean exactly.
Have a reviewer reconstruct the displayed mean from the three counts before interpreting the comparison. Then ask them to explain which quantity is being preferred and why. If the preference changes when the column heading changes, the decision may be driven by wording rather than by an agreed technical objective.
The local checks used independent rational arithmetic from the histogram as well as array calculations. Agreement between those routes establishes the numerical comparison, not whether a listener would prefer either output. Keep the measured exercise separate from any real programme so that a training result cannot accidentally become an approval note for a production export.
Return the decision to the actual delivery
Give the sound owner the declared operation, unchanged inputs, reported quantities and unresolved production question together. Do not recommend a processing change solely because one summary improved. The owner may need to inspect the actual export path or clarify an earlier conversion stage before deciding whether the illustration is relevant.
If a real review is authorized later, preserve the source and document the operation that was actually performed. Do not describe a menu setting as evidence that the intended processing occurred, and do not infer that a numerical example approves every application using the same label. Ask for the receiving evidence appropriate to the actual deliverable.
Close this exercise with a precise interpretation rather than a universal quality claim. No audio was played, no recording was altered and no platform requirement was certified. The useful outcome is a reviewer who can challenge an unspecified improvement claim and explain what evidence would be needed before accepting a real production decision.
Make the reasoning concrete.
A fictional training-audio coordinator receives a recommendation labeled “more accurate export.” The supporting report highlights only one favorable summary from the numerical fixture.
Repeat the improvement claim
Opening: Approve the recommendation without defining its criterion.
Hypothesis: The review appears straightforward.
Risk: The wording may imply a benefit the evidence does not establish.
Explain the complete contrast
Opening: Present the separate quantities and ask which objective applies.
Hypothesis: The sound owner can review the actual tradeoff.
Risk: The synthetic demonstration still cannot settle the listening decision.
The coordinator corrects the vague interpretation and requests the relevant production evidence without editing an audio file.
Take the questions into your next brief.
Use these prompts in your own notes. Nothing is submitted from this page.
Question
What specific concern prompted the proposed operation?
Definition
Which quantity does the report call error?
Reproduction
Can another reviewer recover the displayed result from the supplied inputs?
Interpretation
Which conclusion is supported and which remains untested?
Decision
What evidence does the sound owner need for the actual delivery?
Watch for the wrong conclusion.
- Using one favorable column to support an undefined improvement claim.
- Changing the generation sequence while claiming an exact replay.
- Treating numerical agreement as a completed listening review.
Your next action
Reconstruct the displayed mean from the counts and explain why the production recommendation still needs a stated criterion.
