A survey model can reveal which measured perceptions travel together. It does not by itself show that changing a high-ranked perception will cause the desired business outcome or be the most economical action.

What you will leave with: A driver-analysis interpretation note linking the measured relationship to a specific, testable intervention and its unresolved assumptions.

Use this when

  • A brand tracker ranks perceptions as drivers of consideration or recommendation.
  • A team plans spending based only on a high-importance, low-performance quadrant.

This is not a complete regression review, a causal identification strategy or permission to infer individual traits from aggregate research.

Recover the actual model question

Write the outcome in the respondent’s original wording and identify the candidate perceptions used to explain it. Record the population, fieldwork period and treatment of missing responses. A model of stated consideration is not automatically a model of purchases. A model among current customers may not explain how unfamiliar prospects decide.

Qualtrics documents separate brand-driver calculations, including relative-weight importance, Pearson correlation and a current score. Inspect which calculation produced the chart rather than treating all values labeled importance as interchangeable. The selected predictors and outcome are part of the meaning of the result, not technical details that can be omitted from the recommendation.

Check whether the ranking is stable and interpretable

Ask the analyst about overlapping predictors, coding choices, coverage and model diagnostics. Near-duplicate questions can make the story difficult to interpret even when the software produces a clean ranking. A model cannot evaluate an important factor that was never measured, so record plausible omissions rather than declaring the included list complete.

Review uncertainty and sensitivity to reasonable analytic choices. If removing one highly similar predictor changes the apparent leader, the team needs that context before choosing a campaign platform. Do not make cosmetic changes to the variables until the desired item wins. Preserve the original analysis and document any justified revision with the person qualified to assess its consequences.

Separate an observed relationship from an intervention

Qualtrics’ statistical guidance explicitly distinguishes correlation from causation. For a marketing decision, ask what could produce the association besides the proposed causal story. People who already like a brand may rate many of its qualities positively, or an unmeasured experience may affect both the perception and the outcome.

Describe the intervention precisely. “Improve trust” is a goal; changing a confusing delivery promise or strengthening a visible service guarantee is an action. Explain why that action might change the measured perception, why the perception might change the outcome and what evidence is missing at each step. This turns an attractive chart into a testable chain rather than a guaranteed return.

Choose the next investment with evidence and constraints

Put the hypothesis beside implementation cost, feasibility, truthfulness and potential downside. The strongest association may point to a capability the business cannot change quickly, while a smaller relationship may reveal a tractable customer problem. Do not translate the relative weight directly into a budget share or a promised percentage lift.

Choose a proportionate test or further investigation and define what would change the decision. Keep the original driver analysis as context, then evaluate the actual intervention with a suitable design. Report what changed in customer experience, perception and business outcomes separately. If the results disagree with the initial story, revise the explanation instead of relabeling the chart to make it appear prescient.

Make the reasoning concrete.

A fictional service brand finds that “easy to deal with” has a strong relationship with recommendation scores. The team proposes a large advertising campaign claiming simplicity without changing a difficult returns process.

Advertise the top-ranked perception

Opening: Assume repeating the phrase will produce the modeled outcome.

Hypothesis: The campaign aligns with the chart’s highest bar.

Risk: The analysis did not establish that the message changes experience or recommendation.

Specify a testable intervention

Opening: Investigate the difficult process and test a concrete improvement with separate experience and perception measures.

Hypothesis: The team examines a plausible mechanism.

Risk: The intervention still requires operational work and valid evaluation.

The team treats the ranking as a reason to investigate the service experience. It does not present a correlational weight as the expected return from an advertising claim.

Take the questions into your next brief.

Use these prompts in your own notes. Nothing is submitted from this page.

  1. Outcome

What exactly did the study measure?

  2. Inputs

Which perceptions were included, omitted or overlapping?

  3. Calculation

Is the score a correlation, relative weight or current level?

  4. Mechanism

What concrete action could change the relevant experience?

  5. Test

What evidence would support or reject the intervention hypothesis?

Watch for the wrong conclusion.

  • Calling a survey association a causal effect.
  • Allocating budget in direct proportion to relative weights.
  • Treating a low performance score as proof an advertising message will fix it.
  • Changing predictors until the preferred narrative becomes the leader.
