Inspect reconstructed measurements behind the retained-variance headline
A strong aggregate variance ratio can conceal the loss of a task-relevant distinction.

A dimension-reduction summary does not decide which information a receiving task can afford to lose. Inspect the reconstructed examples before approving their use.
What you will leave with: A row-level reconstruction comparison with a separate task-preservation decision.
Use this when
- A technical proposal uses retained variance as its main acceptance argument.
- A receiving workflow needs a particular measurement distinction to remain available.
Not a customer-clustering exercise, a causal model, a forecasting validation or permission to replace a production representation.
State the receiving task before reviewing the summary
Use an invented layout diagnostic containing four two-coordinate measurements. Both coordinates use the same arbitrary measurement unit and the same fixed origin. The receiving task needs to tell whether a marker is above, on or below the horizontal reference. This task is stipulated for teaching, not inferred from an actual reader study or claimed to represent every use of the data.
Scikit-learn PCA centers inputs and projects onto principal directions; it does not scale each feature automatically. Here use one component, full SVD and no whitening. The four already-centered rows are (−2,0), (0,−1), (0,1), (2,0).
Ask the owner to preserve the input definitions, units and the requested downstream use. A representation that is suitable for one summary may be unsuitable for another purpose. Do not infer that a convenient transformation is authorized for every future report simply because the analyst successfully fitted it once.
Keep the raw teaching measurements available during the comparison. The exercise does not require personal data or a real customer record. If a production team later proposes an evaluation, agree its permitted input scope separately and retain a versioned baseline. A synthetic diagnostic can expose a conceptual problem without establishing its frequency or severity in the live workload.
Reconstruct what one component retains
The sample covariance is diagonal: 8/3 and 2/3. The first direction is the horizontal axis. Projecting and reconstructing gives (−2,0), (0,0), (0,0), (2,0). Retained variance is (8/3)/(10/3) = 0.8.
Place the original and reconstructed measurements beside one another in the same row order. Label the transformation settings above the comparison rather than relying on a file name. The reviewer should be able to identify which original observation produced each reconstructed one and whether a later export silently changed the order or the interpretation of a coordinate.
NumPy’s SVD documentation relates singular values to the matrix factorization. Here their squares are 8 and 2; retaining the first term reproduces the same reconstruction. An independent exact diagonal-covariance calculation confirms the chosen direction.
Local execution used scikit-learn 1.8.0 and NumPy 2.3.5. The opened references identify versions 1.9.1 and 2.5 respectively. The fixture uses the stated common operations; it does not assert that untested newer features work in the installed environment. The saved input, settings and numerical result are the evidence for what was actually executed.
Inspect the consequence that the aggregate hides
Squared reconstruction errors by row are 0, 1, 1, 0; their sum is 2. The original squared total is 10. The two vertical observations both become the origin, so their opposite sides of the reference cannot be recovered from this reduced representation.
Ask the receiving owner to apply the stated task to the reconstructed rows, then compare that result with the original observations. This is not a general claim that the reduction is poor. It demonstrates that the displayed summary and the chosen task can disagree. The owner must decide whether the lost distinction is essential, incidental or outside the permitted use.
Keep the numerical error record separate from the task explanation. An analyst may correctly reproduce the summary while an editor correctly rejects the representation for a particular display. Those findings do not contradict one another. The useful handoff explains which question each piece of evidence answers instead of forcing both reviewers to accept one vague label such as accurate.
If the proposed representation omits information the task needs, ask for an alternative and evaluate it under the same baseline. Possibilities belong to the responsible analyst and the actual use case; this toy example does not select a universal component count or certify a different method. Avoid adjusting a target until a favored proposal passes without recording that the acceptance requirement changed.
Approve a bounded use rather than an unrestricted score
Deliver the original inputs, transformation specification, reconstructed examples, numerical checks and task comparison together. State which receiving use was reviewed. A later request to reuse the same representation for a different decision needs its own evidence, particularly if the new purpose depends on a distinction the earlier review treated as unimportant.
Ask the owner to define a representative evaluation for any real deployment. The four-row fixture deliberately exposes one failure pattern and is not a sample of actual operational performance. Successful replay on it cannot establish how often a production dataset contains a similar pattern, whether the chosen preprocessing is appropriate or how future observations will behave.
Preserve the original representation and the proposed alternative as distinct versions. If an implementation change is later authorized, check the receiving output rather than only the analyst’s notebook. A correctly calculated intermediate result can still be mislabeled or connected to the wrong records during handover. Record any unresolved mismatch before interpreting business consequences.
Close with the limited conclusion supported here: the transformation and its summary are reproducible, but the chosen receiving distinction is not preserved. No production dataset was replaced, no reader behavior was measured and no workflow was changed. The completed worksheet turns an attractive technical headline into a specific decision about intended use.
Make the reasoning concrete.
A fictional design-operations team receives a reduced measurement table with a reassuring summary statistic. Its intended display still needs to distinguish markers on opposite sides of a reference line.
Approve from the aggregate
Opening: Treat the summary as sufficient evidence for every downstream use.
Hypothesis: The technical review can close quickly.
Risk: The receiving task may depend on an omitted distinction.
Review reconstructed examples
Opening: Compare the original and reconstructed task evidence before choosing a permitted use.
Hypothesis: The owner can identify the relevant information loss.
Risk: A real evaluation still requires justified inputs and broader testing.
The team keeps the original measurements for the stated task and asks the analyst to evaluate an appropriate alternative before any production change.
