Cut a short label at a defensible text boundary
Budget the shortened label and its omission mark together instead of cutting at an arbitrary storage offset.

A short surface needs a deliberate omission policy. Decide what the reader must still recognize, which full version remains available and when a shorter approved wording is better than automatic cutting.
What you will leave with: A length-limited label specimen with an explicit omission decision and a recoverable full version.
Use this when
- A CMS counter disagrees with the text delivered to a compact card.
- An automatic abbreviation damages a name or removes its essential distinction.
Not responsive line wrapping, font substitution, translation quality or a universal definition of a character.
Separate the reading promise from the technical counter
Unicode Text Segmentation revision 49 is an approved Unicode 18.0.0 annex. Grapheme clusters approximate perceived characters, but their count does not bound encoded byte size.
Describe the compact surface before specifying its counter. A directory chip, a saved selection and a decorative teaser need not retain the same information. Decide whether omission is permitted at all, where the complete label can be found and what should happen when the shortened form would be ambiguous. Keep those decisions visible to the editor instead of hiding them inside a utility function.
Ask the receiving owner for the actual limit and the object it applies to. A field contract may differ from the CMS preview. Record the intended language and implementation, and preserve the original string beside every proposed abbreviation. The source should remain available for later displays that have room; a compact presentation should not silently become the only surviving publication value.
Work one small specimen all the way through
Our Node 24.22.1 fixture uses ICU 78.3, Unicode 17.0: o plus U+0308 plus ! has three code points, two clusters and four UTF-8 bytes. Keeping the first cluster plus … produces two clusters but six bytes.
Give this fictional surface two explicit conditions: at most two counted display units and a five-byte transport allowance. The proposed output fails the second condition. Do not declare it acceptable because the visual preview looks short. Equally, do not remove arbitrary pieces until a low-level counter turns green. The owner must choose a supported alternative that still carries the intended meaning.
For this tiny specimen, a bare omission mark would carry almost no useful label. That is a legitimate reason to request a different approved display value or a roomier component rather than force an automatic result. Write down the rejected candidate and why it failed. A useful acceptance artifact includes a no-suitable-abbreviation outcome, not just the first string that fits.
Check what the shortened value still distinguishes
Place the candidate beside neighboring entries that readers might confuse with it. If two project names collapse to the same visible fragment, decide how the interface will distinguish them. A tooltip alone may not serve every interaction path; ask the component owner to demonstrate the supported route to complete information. This lesson does not prescribe an accessibility implementation, but it does require a usable full-label promise.
Include a meaningful suffix, a short original that needs no omission and a name whose important distinction appears near the end. Have the editorial owner judge what each candidate now says. An automated cutter cannot decide whether dropping a location, edition or qualifier changes a promise. Prefer a consciously authored short label when that judgment is essential.
Keep the omission treatment consistent within the reviewed component. The same mark should not sometimes mean missing words and elsewhere mean a literal part of the name without adequate context. Check the saved selection and confirmation view as well as the browsing card. A customer should not have to infer that two differently shortened labels refer to the same choice.
Hand off a policy with real failure outcomes
Record the full value, candidate, relevant limits, accepted alternative and editorial owner. Include the implementation details with the computational evidence; the published standard and the deployed library are separate facts. Do not promise that a fixture run in one environment establishes the behavior of every browser or downstream application.
Retain failed examples when a component or language set changes. They explain why the team chose an authored abbreviation, a larger component or a request for editorial review. The acceptance decision should be reproducible without turning every string into a manual exception. Define the ordinary supported path, then make its unresolved cases visible instead of quietly damaging the content to satisfy a counter.
Make the reasoning concrete.
A fictional exhibition directory adds compact project chips. Two long titles share the same opening words, and the automatically shortened chips become indistinguishable.
Approve the count alone
Opening: Accept every candidate that fits the component.
Hypothesis: The layout remains tidy.
Risk: Readers can choose the wrong project.
Review recognizability
Opening: Retain the full title and approve distinct short labels for the ambiguous cases.
Hypothesis: The chip still identifies the intended entry.
Risk: Some cases require editorial work.
The directory accepts a deliberate short-label policy with an unresolved-case route, rather than equating a passing counter with a useful label.

- Ignoring the space consumed by the omission treatment.
- Destroying the full value to fit one component.
- Accepting indistinguishable abbreviations.
