Make a product scan resolve to the right kind of information
A working destination can still be the wrong resource for the requested task.

Product-linked content needs an explicit relationship between the identified item and the kind of information requested. Review default consumer routing and supported typed-resource requests separately. Opening a valid promotional page is not proof that an application requesting instructions receives instructions for the correct product.
What you will leave with: A product-identity and resource-purpose acceptance matrix with tested mappings, fallback limits and accountable content owners.
Use this when
- One product identifier connects to several information resources.
- A resolver or linkset change affects consumer and specialist routes differently.
This is semantic product-resource routing, not QR scan analytics or a universal requirement to use a resolver. GS1 online-technologies guidance Release 1.0.0, September 2026, checked on 7 November 2026. No live redirects, permissions or personal-data fixtures are required.
Separate the identified item from its information resources
List the exact product identities in scope and the resources associated with each. Describe the purpose of a destination in ordinary language: product information, instructions or another supported task. Keep a campaign page distinct from a maintained product resource even when both currently live on the same website. The relationship must survive a later content move without silently changing its meaning.
GS1’s guidance distinguishes the item identifier from the locations of information about that item. It describes link types as expressions of the relationship and a resolver as one available approach, not a prerequisite for every implementation. Use that distinction to agree the intended routing contract with the technical and content owners before checking individual URLs.
Define what each supported requester should receive
Create separate cases for the default consumer journey and each explicitly supported resource request. Record the requested purpose, expected product scope and appropriate destination. Do not assume that every scanning application asks for the same resource or that a generic home page is an acceptable answer to every request. Have the implementation owner explain which behaviors are actually supported.
Include missing-resource and unavailable-target cases. Ask the owner to specify the legitimate fallback or error behavior under the implemented standard rather than inventing a silent substitution. A page for a nearby model can be more misleading than a clear unavailable response. Keep essential information available through appropriate alternative channels; this workflow does not justify putting required safety information exclusively behind a code or sign-in.
Inspect the semantic result in a controlled fixture
Use safe test identifiers or approved nonpersonal product fixtures in a controlled environment. Have the technical owner exercise the supported requests and retain the resolved resource evidence. Check the identified item, requested relationship and actual content together. A successful response status or a rendered page proves transport, not that the content fulfills the intended resource purpose.
Test a destination change independently from an identifier change. If instructions move to a new site, confirm that the instructions relationship still leads to the correct maintained version while the default consumer route behaves as agreed. Include a deliberately absent mapping and a wrong-product fixture so the test can expose plausible but incorrect content. Avoid adding tracking identifiers, personal profiles or location data merely to make the demonstration realistic.
Accept ownership and change behavior with the mappings
Assign an owner to each relationship and destination, including resources hosted by another authorized party. Record who approves a content replacement and how the routing owner learns of a move or retirement. A stable identifier cannot compensate for an abandoned target. Keep the accepted mapping revision and its test cases so future changes can be reviewed without reconstructing the original intent.
Separate this acceptance from barcode print quality, checkout behavior and response measurement. Those can fail independently and need their own evidence. Recheck the affected typed and default routes when a resource changes rather than testing only the most visible consumer page. The final artifact should say which item-resource relationships are supported and verified, not claim that every application or every GS1 implementation behaves identically.
Make the reasoning concrete.
A fictional tool brand uses one identified product to connect to a promotional page and an instruction resource. After a website move, the default page works but a supported instructions request is routed to the promotional homepage.
Accept the successful page load
Opening: Approve the change because scanning opens a branded website.
Hypothesis: The default route appears healthy.
Risk: A requester asking for instructions receives a different kind of content.
Test the requested relationship
Opening: Check default and instruction-resource requests independently and correct the mismatched mapping through the owner.
Hypothesis: Acceptance verifies resource meaning as well as transport.
Risk: Unsupported requests still require explicit bounded behavior rather than invented compatibility.
The team chooses the relationship-level check. It does not count visits or change the product identifier to conceal a routing error.
Take the questions into your next brief.
Use these prompts in your own notes. Nothing is submitted from this page.
Identity
Which product identity is the starting point?
Purpose
Which resource relationship does each supported request seek?
Target
Does the actual content match both product and purpose?
Fallback
What approved behavior applies when the requested resource is absent?
Owner
Who maintains each relationship and rechecks it after a move?
Watch for the wrong conclusion.
- Treating a branded page as a valid response to every resource request.
- Substituting a similar product’s instructions silently.
- Calling resolver use mandatory for every product-linked experience.
Your next action
Take one product-linked route and verify a supported typed-resource request separately from its default consumer destination.
