The problem. The idea. The experience.

Address unwanted sounds for autistic users with auditory sensitivity.

How the idea came to life

A beta app configured compatible earbuds’ responses to selected sounds.

How it reached people

Free Android download in Spain; launched through Samsung’s purpose programme.

Read the campaign story

Samsung's Unfear made a brand-purpose campaign around a specific use for its audio technology. Introduced in Spain in March 2023, the project addressed unwanted sounds that can be difficult for some autistic people with auditory sensitivity. Rather than presenting inclusion only through an advertisement, Samsung and Cheil worked with autism organisations on a free Android application intended to control how compatible earbuds responded to sound. Samsung placed it within its Technology with Purpose programme.

At launch, Samsung described Unfear as a beta application for compatible Android phones and Galaxy Buds2 Pro earbuds. Users could select categories of external sound and thresholds that would trigger noise cancellation. A separate function adjusted mobile content audio, and other controls included playing a preselected calming recording or contacting a chosen emergency contact. Samsung said autism associations had participated in development and testing. These are descriptions of the product's intended functions and the company's development process, not independent clinical findings.

The strategic reading is that a narrowly defined accessibility problem can demonstrate a technology company's competence more concretely than a general promise to improve lives. Personal controls also matter to the story: the project acknowledges that a useful sound setting will not be identical for everyone. For creative teams, the lesson is to start with a real task and involve affected users before choosing the publicity format. The communication can then explain a usable intervention, its compatibility requirements and its boundaries, instead of allowing an emotional film to stand in for the intervention itself.

Co-design the solution

Co-design with affected users and relevant organisations before deciding what the campaign will claim.

State practical requirements

Describe compatibility, setup and user control prominently when usefulness depends on them.

Separate function from efficacy

Keep functional product evidence separate from claims about health or quality-of-life outcomes.

A small test for another brief

A venue works with consenting adult visitors and accessibility specialists to test a clearly described quiet-space guide, offering user choice without collecting medical histories.

Measure whether visitors can find and use the information, and ask about barriers. Do not translate usability feedback into clinical efficacy.

Stop if users cannot opt out, the guide promises a health outcome or safety-critical sounds could be obscured by the proposed experience.

  • Describe compatibility, setup and user control prominently when usefulness depends on them.
  • Agree on one outcome, a reasonable comparison and the stop condition before release.
