The problem. The idea. The experience.
Immediate purchase reviews can say little about an appliance’s durability over time.
How the idea came to life
Darty invited feedback after more than a year of product use and displayed long-term reviews alongside conventional reviews.
How it reached people
Customer email invitations, product pages and public communication about product longevity.

The 2023 agency announcement and 2024 Darty page document the idea and implementation. No causal reduction in waste is established.
Read the campaign story
Publicis Conseil announced Long Lasting Reviews for Darty in March 2023. The idea was to ask customers about products after more than twelve months of use. Darty’s July 2024 explanation describes questionnaires and long-term reviews appearing beside conventional reviews on product pages, stating availability from 12 May 2024. This study distinguishes the earlier announcement from the later documented customer-facing implementation instead of treating them as the same date.
The One Club’s retrospective places the initiative within Darty’s wider longevity strategy. It also reports brand measures associated with broader advertising. Those measures do not isolate the contribution of a review feature. The defensible outcome here is a documented change in the timing and display of customer feedback. Longer use can produce more relevant observations, but the resulting reviews remain voluntary accounts rather than independent tests of every product’s expected lifetime.
Editorial interpretation: the campaign finds a mismatch between the moment evidence is requested and the benefit being promised. Delivery and first impressions are visible immediately; reliability is not. Changing the question’s timing creates a useful contrast without inventing a new consumer habit from nothing. Customers already understand reviews. The innovation is to make an existing behaviour answer a different and potentially more valuable purchasing question.
Editorial interpretation: the commercial challenge is accepting evidence that may be less flattering. A credible long-term review system must accommodate breakdowns, repair experiences and products no longer functioning. If only satisfied owners still using an appliance respond, the feature can create survivorship bias. The interface should explain the age and nature of the evidence, while the business needs a route for learning from negative patterns rather than treating them solely as reputation problems.
Match the evidence window to the promise
Write down when a customer could reasonably judge each benefit. Ease of setup, service responsiveness and durability require different observation periods. Send focused questions at the appropriate time rather than repeating the same satisfaction survey. For products with seasonal use, calendar age alone may be misleading. Ask about actual usage and context without making the questionnaire so burdensome that only unusually committed customers complete it.
Invite the missing experiences
Include owners whose product failed, was repaired or was replaced where appropriate and permitted. Do not restrict invitations to people who have already given positive feedback. Explain moderation rules and distinguish product experience from delivery or retailer service. Review response patterns before drawing conclusions about a category. A visible collection of long-term stories is useful, but its authority depends on how it was gathered and which experiences are absent.
Use feedback beyond the product page
Create an internal route from recurring complaints to support, buying and supplier teams. Otherwise the initiative may improve marketing language without improving the customer offer. Track whether repeated issues receive a response and whether future buyers can find relevant information. Preserve the original review context when summarising themes. A few anecdotes should not become a universal reliability claim, but they can identify questions worth investigating with stronger evidence.
A small test for another brief
For one durable product category, invite a small, permission-appropriate cohort of past customers to describe their experience after a meaningful period of use.
Compare decision confidence and comprehension with ordinary reviews. Track response bias, repair themes and the actions taken by the business.
Stop making durability claims if the sample is selective, product versions cannot be distinguished or negative experiences are excluded.
- Define the purchase period and include failed or replaced products where records allow.
- Ask about usage, repairs and whether the product still meets its purpose.
- Show the age and context of feedback and publish clear moderation rules.
