The problem. The idea. The experience.
Express the creative event’s theme through a coherent visual identity.
How the idea came to life
Original mask-inspired illustrations formed an expressive identity for the 37th edition.
How it reached people
Contemporary coverage places the event theme in 2024, separately from the 2025 award archive.

Guts Must Be Crazy was the theme of Citra Pariwara’s 37th edition. Contemporary Indonesian coverage places the event in December 2024, while D&AD documents an identity built around expressive masks inspired by Indonesian traditions. The design record credits Ou Creative and Qualita Company for P3I. The 2025 archive year is therefore kept separate from the documented 2024 event activity.
Editorial interpretation: the identity visualises the feeling of encountering an unexpected idea. A family of faces can express variation while a consistent premise holds the campaign together. For an event that celebrates creative work, the identity also becomes a demonstration of the standard it wishes to encourage. That creates a useful tension: it needs enough character to be distinctive, but enough discipline to carry dates, categories and practical entry information clearly.
The sources establish the theme, visual concept and credits, not an increase in entries or a measurable improvement in creative confidence. This case does not reproduce the masks or claim expertise in the traditions that informed them. It treats cultural reference as a responsibility requiring informed collaboration, and the language of boldness as an invitation to thoughtful experimentation rather than permission to ignore safety, accuracy or other people’s rights.
Define a repeatable expressive rule before making variations
A visual family needs more than many different illustrations. Write the rule that makes them recognisably related: a shared emotional gesture, construction logic, palette or relationship to type. Then decide where variation is useful, such as categories or stages of an event. Test the system with a plain administrative message as well as the hero poster. If it only works at large scale with abundant space, it is not yet an event identity. The rule should help people navigate and recognise the programme, not simply provide endless assets for the design team to produce.
Credit cultural references with specificity and care
Traditional forms should not be treated as an anonymous library of decorative shapes. Research their contexts, consult people with relevant knowledge and explain which elements are being interpreted. Avoid suggesting that one visual treatment represents a whole country or that sacred or restricted forms are freely available for commercial use. Commission original work and establish rights clearly. A contemporary identity can acknowledge influence without copying an artefact. The process should be able to answer a simple question from an audience member: why this reference, and who helped decide that this use was appropriate?
Make creative courage compatible with clear constraints
An event can celebrate experimentation without implying that responsible review is timid. State which conventions can be challenged and which obligations remain fixed, including consent, attribution and truthful claims. The same clarity helps entrants understand categories and deadlines. A memorable slogan should not be asked to carry the entire participation journey. Use the expressive identity to invite attention, then provide straightforward information that reduces avoidable mistakes. The strongest test is whether someone unfamiliar with the organisation can understand how to participate without already sharing the industry’s language or knowing an insider who can explain it.
A bounded test for another brief
Proposed adaptation: a local design meetup could commission an original family of abstract expressions based on participants’ descriptions of surprise, avoiding borrowed cultural motifs. Apply the system to an event poster, a schedule and an accessibility-information card. Compare it with a single-image identity using identical text. Ask prospective attendees to identify the event, find a session and explain the tone they expect. Include a review of whether the boldness language feels welcoming to beginners. This tests visual coherence and practical communication without copying the original masks or equating shock value with the quality of a creative idea.
Measure recognition across formats, information-finding accuracy, perceived welcome and confusion about the event’s purpose. Keep enthusiasm for the artwork separate from willingness to attend. Record production effort so variation does not become unnecessary overhead.
Stop if cultural references lack appropriate permission or context, the identity obscures essential information or the theme encourages irresponsible risk-taking.
