The problem. The idea. The experience.
Connect domestic travel promotion to participating accommodation offers.
How the idea came to life
Opt-in offers, identifying badges, a dedicated page and a film formed an integrated programme.
How it reached people

Read the campaign story
Agoda launched GoLocal on 18 June 2020 to promote domestic travel. Participating accommodation providers offered domestic deals and received visibility through campaign touchpoints, including a dedicated page and identifying badges. A brand film framed nearby travel through an experienced traveller’s perspective. This study covers the integrated programme, including its partner and consumer sides, rather than treating the film or individual hotel offers as separate campaign families.
Editorial interpretation: the useful mechanism is coordination between supply and discovery. A platform cannot make a category attractive solely by advertising it if customers cannot identify suitable inventory. A common label can connect the story to an available offer, while a partner programme gives suppliers a reason to participate. The strongest version makes eligibility and practical conditions legible rather than expecting a badge to carry meanings it cannot substantiate.
The launch release contains promotional statements about early participants, but no comparable analysis sufficient to establish causal booking uplift. Those statements are not adopted as results here. The pandemic context is historical, not current travel or health guidance. Neither proximity nor campaign participation establishes safety, quality or environmental superiority. Any modern adaptation needs current operating information, and the proposed pilot below avoids booking or promoting travel altogether.
Design the supplier promise and audience promise together
Write down exactly what participating suppliers contribute and exactly what customers receive. A programme becomes confusing when suppliers believe they are buying visibility while customers assume membership certifies quality. Separate commercial participation from any independently assessed standard. Establish who verifies each offer and how expired or unavailable inventory is removed. For a small marketplace, a simple approved-offer register may be more useful than a polished campaign launch. The communication should explain what the shared label means in ordinary language, including what it does not establish, so neither side needs to guess at the bargain behind the badge.
Carry a campaign idea into searchable inventory
If the story asks people to reconsider an overlooked category, make that category easy to find without relying on memory of a campaign name. Provide clear filters, relevant availability and a stable route back to the original offer. Avoid mixing unrelated listings into the destination simply to make the page look full. A limited but accurate selection can support a stronger experience than a broad page with uncertain eligibility. Review the journey with someone arriving from the film, someone using search and someone following a partner link. Each route should preserve the same terms and explain why the item belongs there.
Separate partner selection from campaign effects
Suppliers who opt into a programme may differ from those who do not in price, capacity, motivation and existing demand. Comparing their raw bookings can therefore make the campaign appear more effective than the evidence warrants. A practical evaluation should describe those differences before claiming an effect. If random assignment is feasible and fair, compare equivalent eligible inventory under clearly defined exposure conditions. Otherwise report descriptive observations with their limits. Also examine displacement: an increase for featured partners may reflect movement away from unfeatured partners rather than additional demand. That distinction matters when deciding whether the programme creates useful value for the marketplace overall.
A bounded test for another brief
Proposed adaptation: a local craft directory could pilot a nearby-workshop page with consenting adult-owned studios. Invite each studio to submit one clearly priced session with verified dates and access details. Randomly show adult test participants either a plain list or a version with a programme label that explains the same eligibility rules. Keep inventory and ordering identical. Ask participants to find a suitable option and explain what the label guarantees. Use a non-transactional prototype and no visitor tracking beyond consented task observations. This isolates the usefulness of a shared programme cue without reproducing pandemic travel promotion or implying a quality certification.
Measure offer comprehension, mistaken badge meanings, successful matching and information gaps. Record supplier update effort separately. Do not interpret prototype choices as bookings, economic recovery or evidence of safer participation.
Stop if the badge implies certification, eligibility cannot be verified, expired offers remain visible or participating suppliers cannot withdraw inaccurate information.
